Why Patterns Matter on the Great Wave
The Sport Gloves | Great Wave is one of the best-looking gloves in CS2. The design is based on "The Great Wave off Kanagawa" โ the famous Japanese woodblock print โ and it looks incredible in-game.
But here's the thing most people don't realize until they're already shopping: not all Great Wave gloves look the same. The pattern seed changes how the wave artwork sits on the glove, and some seeds look way cleaner than others.
On a good pattern, the waves are centered, the artwork flows naturally, and the right hand isn't weirdly clipped. On a bad one, the wave gets cut off, the alignment is off, and the whole thing just looks... wrong.
Collectors know this. That's why certain seeds sell for a premium while others sit at market price. So if you're buying Great Wave gloves and want to make sure you're not overpaying for a mid pattern (or underselling a good one), this guide should help.
๐ What Makes a Pattern Good or Bad?
There are basically three things to look at:
- Wave centering โ Is the main wave sitting nicely in the middle of the glove, or is it pushed to one side?
- Clipping on the right hand โ The right hand is where most patterns start looking weird. On bad seeds, the wave gets cut off by the glove border, especially near the thumb area.
- Overall symmetry โ Do both gloves look balanced together, or does one look significantly different from the other?
The best patterns nail all three. The worst ones fail on at least two. Most patterns fall somewhere in between.
๐ Tier 1 โ Best Patterns
These are the patterns collectors actively hunt for. The waves are centered, minimal clipping on the right hand, and the overall look is clean. If you have one of these, you're sitting on a premium seed.
Notes
- 579 absolutely belongs here โ the wave is very centered and it's one of the cleanest seeds overall
- 976 is a strong pattern that shouldn't be overlooked. Some lists miss it, but it's Tier 1 quality
- 47 gets debated sometimes, but the alignment is genuinely clean โ it stays in Tier 1
These seeds typically sell above market price, sometimes significantly depending on the float. If you're buying, expect a premium. If you're selling, make sure you know what you have before listing at market.
๐ฅ Tier 2 โ Good Patterns
Still visually strong, but you'll notice some differences compared to Tier 1. The waves might shift a bit to one side, or there's more noticeable clipping on the right hand. These are solid gloves that look good in-game โ just not top-tier collector material.
Notes
- 505 is very close to Tier 1 on certain floats โ borderline case that could go either way
- Several patterns in this tier look different depending on wear. A clean FT can look better than a beat-up MW on some seeds
- These typically sell at market price or a slight premium, depending on the buyer
๐ฅ Tier 3 โ Decent Patterns
Still good-looking gloves โ they're Great Waves after all โ but the wave alignment has clear issues. You'll see more asymmetry, the white "mountain" part of the artwork becomes more prominent, and the overall visual impact is weaker compared to the tiers above.
Notes
- 273 shows the white mountain pretty clearly and the wave is visibly asymmetrical
- These are still nice gloves, just not collector-tier. Don't expect a premium on these
- If you're buying on a budget, Tier 3 patterns at market price are honestly a great deal โ they still look sick in-game
๐ TL;DR โ Quick Pattern Summary
๐ฐ What This Means When Buying or Selling
If you're buying: always check the pattern seed before paying. A Tier 1 pattern is worth the premium โ you'll notice the difference every round. But don't overpay for a Tier 2 that someone is trying to sell as "best pattern." Check the seed against this list.
If you're selling: know what you have. If you're sitting on a 728 or a 339, don't just list it at market price on Steam. Take it to a trading community or a marketplace where pattern-aware buyers will pay what it's actually worth.
And if you're just looking for a good deal โ Tier 3 patterns at market price are honestly underrated. The Great Wave design looks amazing regardless of pattern. You're not going to be disappointed.
